Standish Community High School’s own “Wembley wonders” (the Y7 Rugby team), narrowly lost the Champions School cup final, in the sweltering heat of Wembley Stadium on the 24th August 2019.
Standish led for most of the match but lost with the last kick of the game. A strong display from the Standish pack was the foundation for the team’s dominant performance.
Everyone in the squad loved the Wembley experience and the opportunity to play in such a prestigious venue. The whole trip was amazing incorporating great accommodation, travel and a tour of the stadium.
The school would like to thank parents and staff who gave up so much time to make the event a memorable one for the whole Rugby squad. A special mention is also needed for all the business sponsors, who enabled the boys to feel “professional” with the quality kit they were able to provide for the team. Your generosity is much appreciated.
In the words of Mr Devine: “To lose 10-8 in the final second of the game was a tough one to take, but the boys are determined to come back next year and get to the top of the pile! The way in which they performed during the game will be the memories the boys, the parents and the staff will take away from the day.”
Well done the Y7 team. Better luck next year.
